Cat in College C1

Chapter 1: Enrollment

In the midst of July, the weather in Wen City made it almost impossible to breathe. The air was humid and thick. Occasionally, a slight breeze would slowly drift through, but it was so useless that it seemed nonexistent.

In an apartment, a white cat with sleek and fluffy fur secretly snuck in front of the refrigerator. She used her furry paws to open the freezer door and her mouth grabbed onto a popsicle, retrieving it from within. The cat hastily bit at the packaging in order to open it.

The popsicle successfully entered her mouth, and the icy treat caused the kitty’s eyes to squint and a shiver went down her body.

When Qi Xiaohan recovered from it, she held the popsicle in her mouth and jumped onto a cabinet directly under the air conditioning vent. With the cold air blowing on her, the kitty’s ears pricked up and listened attentively to the three people talking underneath her.

Qi Xiaohan was a lion cat whose fur was pure white all over, except for the small dot of apricot-yellow that was shaped like flames on her forehead, which looked quite bizarre. Qi Xiaohan’s first memory was of being a stray cat. One day, when she was out hunting, it began to sleet, so she jumped onto the hood of a car and was pitied by some kind-hearted humans, who brought her back to their house. From that point on, she became a kitty with a place to call home.

(T/N: A lion cat = Linqing Lion cat breed.)

That day was Xiaohan (T/N: A solar term), so she was named as such.

Qi Xiaohan’s owners owned a hot pot restaurant, and they lived without lacking money. For the past few years, Qi Xiaohan ate well and was fed generous amounts of meat and fish until she was round and plump. Her fur was fluffy and appeared to be healthy and beautiful.

From the living room, voices were audible:

“… Our family’s Xiao Han can go to college? Our cat hasn’t been through any training. At most, she followed me in chasing after idols. Can she really go?” Sitting in front of the table was a young girl who asked tentatively.

The kitty crouching on top of the cabinet moved its ears slightly. Sneakily, she turned her head towards that direction, her front two paws unmoving. The cat couldn’t help but sit up a bit straighter.

On the sofa, a middle-aged male wearing a Chinese tunic suit replied, “That’s natural, Qi Xiaohan has decent qualifications and innate talent. Our college will make an exception to accept her.”

Saying this, the man earnestly handed them an admissions notice, as well as various school resources.

The owner of the cat, Qi Ning, had previously looked over these resources many times. Now, with a complicated expression, she reviewed them once more. Still, she was skeptical that such a concealed university existed in the country. On the surface, the name of the school was Xunhai Union University and it was listed as a public school. Furthermore, all the documents and certificates were proper. She read through the papers, and was convinced of its validity.

This was a top-secret university.

A few days ago, someone contacted her, and told her to be prepared to send her kitty off to school. They clearly were not compromising with her, rather, ordering her. The small demon was selected to attend the school and would contribute to a project that required top talents. In summary, this outstanding little demon was obligated to attend.

Qi Ning researched this school from countless angles, even meeting up with the teacher that was in charge of admissions to confirm with the government offices. After receiving confirmation that this school was legitimate, she reluctantly admitted to her kitty going to school.

When she was seven or eight years old, she discovered a small, white cat on the hood of her car. The kitten was bony and malnourished, and its only asset were a pair of light green eyes that were beautiful. They were very bright and clear, like lake water. It tilted its head at her and meowed.

The kitten’s meow was adorable and lively. At that moment, Qi Ning set her heart on bringing the kitty home to care for it.

Many years had passed already, but her cat never grew and appeared like a five or six month old kitten. She assumed that the cat’s breed had these characteristics so it did not look like an adult. Although her kitty was smarter than other cats, she did not dwell on the matter. Who knew that when she came home for summer break from her first year of university, the kitty would try to snatch her five-spice beef jerky.

The snow-white kitty used its teeth to tear at the strip of beef jerky and meowed incessantly until she let go.

Just for this one strip of beef jerky, her cat was angrily yelling at her! !

The kitty gnawed on the beef jerky and wouldn’t relinquish it, while at the same time, she lifted her furry claws and was prepared to claw at the hand. And suddenly, as expected, the kitty’s claws smacked the back of her hand.

Qi Ning rubbed her forehead; this cat simply could not go back to being an innocent and obedient kitty.

This cat was a good for nothing.

Like this, she easily saw through her kitty.

Noticing that Qi Ning was silent, the admissions officer, a lion, concluded that the human was dissatisfied and immediately plastered on a beaming smile: “Our employment rate after school is 100%. A large portion of our students find a distinguished job after graduation. If you wish, I can show you some of our school’s notable alumni.”

As he spoke, he handed over his phone. A web page was displayed, and the ‘notable’ figures had extraordinary titles.

What was this, President of Supernatural Supervision Association, Minister of the Demon Management Bureau, Chief of the Sword Sect. All of these titles were majestic and upright.

This so-called school not only targeted to recruit small demons, but also humans and witches, along with other supernatural creatures. After graduating from the school, most of the humans became well-known figures in society. Qi Ning was astonished when she saw the names; she didn’t expect the people who frequently appeared on the news to also have graduated from this mysterious school.

In fact, this school was practically perfect, and there was not much to be dissatisfied with. It was just that the cat she had raised for more than ten years was about to leave. Qi Ning was extremely unwilling and lifted her head to glance at her cat, only to see it eating a popsicle!

Qi Ning’s veins bulged on her temple, but realized her cat that was bound to leave soon. She couldn’t let her leave a bad impression on the teacher, so without lecturing her, she faced Qi Xiaohan and gestured with her hand.

“Xiao Han, come to big sister.”

The white kitty dangled the popsicle out of its mouth and its back paw pushed off the refrigerator, jumping down. Stepping with her fluffy paws, she arrived next to Qi Ning.

“Miaowow.”

Qi Ning embraced the cat and rubbed her soft head. She turned towards the admissions officer and anxiously asked a final question:

“Teacher, are the exams written at school?”

The admissions officer strangely looked at the human and replied, “Naturally, yes.”

Qi Ning immediately felt a chill pass through her heart and glanced down at the creature currently eating a popsicle, the simple-minded, illiterate kitty. It was so worried that it could not eat.

(T/N: The text implies that Qi Ning is being sarcastic here, the kitty is enthusiastically eating the popsicle while her owner is worried sick.)

Crap, her cat wasn’t able to write!

The admissions officer noticed that the human had fallen silent again, and was completely clueless as to why. He paused for a moment before speaking, “Well then, Classmate Qi Xiaohan is accepting the notice to…”

“Wait a minute!”

Qi Ning uncontrollably shouted, interrupting him: “Teacher, Xiao Han will be changing her name. She won’t be Qi Xiaohan any longer, she will be named Qi Yi! No, no, no, she will be named Ding Yi! !”

(T/N: She is changing Qi Xiaohan’s name to be simpler to write. ‘戚小寒’ = Qi Xiaohan, ‘戚一’ = Qi Yi, ‘丁一’ = Ding Yi.)

Admissions officer: ? ? ?

Qi Ning pet the cat and sighed. How could the small paw of her kitty possibly pick up and use a pen? She should change her name to Ding Yi, so at the very least, she wouldn’t be disadvantaged when writing her name.

Attending university was not easy at all.

The kitty lifted her head to face Qi Ning and swallowed the last of the popsicle, meowing:

“Miaowow?”

I’m changing names?

I’m not using your last name?

Qi Xiaohan considered the new name and determined that her previous name was more familiar, and it had a meaning. The kitty resolutely made a decision:

“Miaow—”

Qi Ning: …

Exactly who am I doing this for!

Ultimately, the admissions officer politely rejected the unreasonable request for a name change. He wrote ‘Qi Xiaohan’ on the admissions notice and placed it on the table. In the middle of August, Qi Xiaohan would need to formally report to the school with the slip.

On the first day of school, Qi Ning brought her kitty along while rolling two suitcases forward. The old cat bed was hung on the top of a suitcase, along with another large travel bag.

Because this school was shrouded in mystery, and was restricted to ordinary humans, Qi Ning was not allowed to accompany her kitty to the school. Even Qi Ning knowing about this school was an exception. Qi Xiaohan insisted on Qi Ning being in the know, as her owner would not be able to accept her pet suddenly disappearing.

Qi Xiaohan watched as her owner rolled the luggage, finally arriving at the exclusive airport for Xunhai Union University. She couldn’t help but feel sad and meowed, wanting to give Ning Ning a furry hug.

Unexpectedly, Qi Ning lightly pushed her cat away, and wiped off her sweat: “It’s so hot I want to die, don’t rub against me with your furry body.”

Qi Xiaohan: …

Fine.

“I packed you meatballs, fish balls, meat rolls, and dried meat. Once you get off the airplane, make sure to put them in the freezer. I already asked the teacher; your dormitory room has a refrigerator. Remember to share your snacks with your classmates and don’t eat them all by yourself. Make sure to become good friends with them. Inside the suitcase is a spare cat bed so if you don’t like the accommodations at school, sleep in the cat bed. The teachers don’t check in the beds. I also packed hot pot base. Go to your school supermarket to buy a portable stove burner and you can invite your classmates to eat hot pot. I sent you the website links to the shower gel and blanket. When you run out, make sure to buy them.”

Qi Ning was holding her cat and meticulously detailing everything to her. Qi Xiaohan looked at her human, and attentively meowed at her.

“I understand, don’t worry. Make sure to behave at home, Ning Ning.”

She reached up with her paw and gently poked Qi Ning’s cheek.

Ning Ning: “Boohoohoo, Xiao Han, Sister can’t bear letting you go, boohoohoo…”

The teacher who was assigned to receive the students silently glanced at the other students’ mound of luggage, then looked at the tearful young woman, and sighed.

It was only attending school.

It wasn’t like they wouldn’t be able to meet again. The way these young people thought was becoming more and more confusing.

Hi! I’m deciding to start translating this new, light-hearted comedy/romance novel. I will release 1 chapter per week for now because the language used is a bit harder and will take more time to translate. I will continue to update my other translation work, I Can Talk to Cats, as normal. Thanks for reading!
