Chapter 12: The Cat’s Knowledge (Part One)

Recap: The kitten has survived and is named Sapphire. It has grown into a super pretty ragdoll kitty ❤

In this chapter, we have some cute moments!

If you come across an abandoned, sickly kitten, don’t ignore it. Maybe if you raise it, you may receive an unexpected surprise.

The landlord’s daughter had brought home and treated a sick kitten. Not only that, but it turned out to be a ragdoll cat worth five figures. This news spread throughout the apartment building.

Some people muttered that the Lin family really had dog sh*t luck. Others who actually paid the money from their bank account knew that it was not like this.

(T/N: Dog sh*t luck = good or bad luck happening without a reason. If it’s not clear, others = Lin Lan)

“Wow! Wow!” Qian Xuan went to visit the Lin family the moment she heard of the gossip and completely changed her attitude towards Sapphire: “Ragdoll kitty! It’s a ragdoll cat, it’s a fairy cat!”

(T/N: I know it sounds weird but ragdoll cats are nicknamed ‘仙女猫’ or ‘fairy cat’ in Chinese)

No matter how envious she was, Qian Xuan covered it with her tone of excitement.

Sapphire was plopped on Lin Lan’s lap. Maybe because she was next to the person that she relied on the most, but she was not afraid of the stranger at all.

“It’s so adorable.” Qian Xuan said in an admiring voice, “Before I got Niu Niu at the pet store, I wanted to buy a ragdoll cat. Although I wanted one, they were treasures that I could not afford so I didn’t go to see them. I didn’t expect you to be able to randomly find a ragdoll cat and bring it home. I really envy you.”

Under normal circumstances, it was not possible that a cat from such a valued breed would become a stray cat. It wasn’t nicknamed ‘Walking RMB’ for no reason. The owner of a ragdoll kitty wouldn’t even have enough time to dote on it, how could they possibly bear to part with one in this way?

(T/N: ‘Yuan’ and ‘RMB’/‘RenMinBi’ are the currency of China. For the most part, the two can be used interchangeably. RMB is the ‘official’ currency but yuan is how most people refer to it casually and as a unit of measurement. In this context of ‘Walking RMB’, the ragdoll is like walking money.)

However, this does not account for the ragdoll cat running away from home.

Cats are cats. Even the most docile house cats would occasionally think: “The outside world is so big. I want to go out and see it” and have the urge to escape. This was one of the reasons why so many pets became stray cats. Other than the owner purposely abandoning it, only kittens would have the urge to impulsively sneak out and no one could stop them.

Therefore, there were always stories of people randomly raising stray cats and luckily picking up a valuable pet.

However, Lin Lan thought that her scenario was different from all those stories.

She faced Qian Xuan and sighed while petting/rubbing the cat’s head: “There is no use for this sort of unadulterated envy. Other people might not know, but you have raised Niu Niu. Look at how much suffering and stress I have gone through this month.”

Qian Xuan immediately understood and thought about her own delicate cat that frequently fell ill and was momentarily speechless.

Strangers simply saw that Lin Lan was raising a ragdoll cat. Qian Xuan and the veterinarian both knew that in order to help the kitten recover, Lin Lan spent a lot of money on the medical fees, miscellaneous fees, kitten milk powder, wait… if all of these costs were added up, the cost would almost reach five figures. Not to mention how much work that Lin Lan put in herself. Her tired complexion was obvious to anyone who glanced at her.

Nursing a sick person was very hard on several people, let alone nursing a weak and sickly kitten that needed to be tended to with the utmost care.

Even though Lin Lan invested so much money and time, she was very lucky to even get back something of equal value.

“Now that I know Sapphire was a Ragdoll cat, I am able to understand why it fell sick so easily. Delicate cats are hard to raise. Fortunately, the most critical period of time has passed.” Lin Lan was still anxious, “I would not redo this as it is very draining. Now, it can eat regular cat food and play normally. My parents are also helping me, which eased the burden a lot.”

For a cat to fall sick regularly would be enough to torment its owner. Such a fragile ragdoll kitten fell sick so not only was lots of money and lots of energy needed, but the situation also caused the owner to feel stressed. One could only imagine how much experience Lin Lan accumulated throughout the past month.

Qian Xuan observed that Lin Lan was in a worn-out state and looked down at her leg where something was moving. At that moment, the claws of the kitten were hooked onto the tassels of Lin Lan’s clothes and a strange thought arose in her mind—

The ragdoll cat absorbed the sh*t shoveler’s life essence: Kitten’s health +60, quickly recovering; Sh*t shoveler’s spirit -10, dispirited and listless.

“Valuable cats are hard to raise, it’s not easy for you either.” Qian Xuan faced Lin Lan and sympathized with her. Taking a closer look, Lin Lan appeared pale and tired, so she immediately said, “I won’t bother your rest any longer. In the future, you are welcome to come upstairs and visit. By the way, I want to ask you for guidance on how to make your nutritious cat food.”

“No problem.” Lin Lan lifted the kitten off of her and went to send the guest out.

After she politely sent off Qian Xuan, Lin Lan shook her head. Before, when she was only raising Snowflake, Qian Xuan wasn’t very close with them; they only had the regular relationship between a landlord and a tenant. Now that she owned a ragdoll cat, this woman had somehow manipulated this into a “close relationship”. Who knew if this relationship was real or if she had any alternative motives.

She didn’t have the energy to talk about others when her own family was…

“Xiao Quan left?” Wang Xiuzhi exited the master bedroom when she heard movement outside and asked a rhetorical question. She bent her head to stare at the ragdoll kitten that was squinting its eyes and smiled: “Sapphi, come here! Grandmother will play with you!”

As she spoke, this “Grandmother” brought forth a cat teaser toy from behind her back. She began to wave it in front of the kitten and both its little arms tried to catch it. The kitten was adorably naive and Wang Xiuzhi’s face smiled.

Lin Lan: “…” She paused for a moment and told her mother, “Mom, I am going to rest/take a nap in my bedroom. Don’t call me for dinner.”

“Go to sleep.” Wang Xiuzhi didn’t bother to lift her head and continued to play with the cat. She waved her hand at her daughter and said, “I will take care of Sapphi.”

Listen to her; only a few days have passed and Sapphire was already given a nickname. This sickly cat was upgraded to a treasured one.

Father Lin and Mother Lin changed their opinion so fast that Lin Lan’s thoughts were complicated.

Mother Lin finished teasing the kitten and set it on her legs. The elder smiled at the kitten’s lazy, open mouth while Lin Lan was speechless.

If it was ugly, people left. If it was beautiful, people would politely come over. No matter if it was a cat or a human, this was a world that valued appearances.

Lin Lan headed back to her bedroom for her nap and almost closed the door when Snowflake quickly sneaked in through the crack.

“Miaow—” (Lan Lan, I want to sleep with you!)

“Fine.” Lin Lan didn’t refuse, “But, you’re not allowed to sleep on my stomach, do you understand? Last time I woke up because I couldn’t breathe easily and I just knew that you were curled up on me again.”

“Miaow.” (Then I will sleep by your head.)

The person and the cat were busy conversing and didn’t notice that at the closed door, there was a quiet scratching. Sapphire, who was happily lounging on Mother Lin’s lap, suddenly ran to the door and scratched while anxiously mewing.

“Meoww! Meoww!” (Let me inside! I also want to sleep with mom! Hurry up and let me in!)

The actions of the three month old ragdoll kitten were very silly and combined with the swishing of its tail and its impatient pacing in front of the door, it looked especially adorable.

It was a pity that the people inside the room pretended not to hear (because the kitten would be too lively) and that the people outside were not able to understand. Sapphire was picked up by her grandmother and taken away.

“Sapphi, don’t bother Lan Lan, let’s go play.” Wang Xiuzhi stroked the kitten and thought back to the time when she didn’t value it. Currently, the medium-length fluffy fur still had a faint scent of the shampoo that was used a few days ago. It really was pleasant to smell and soft.

Her daughter had already said before that Sapphi was strictly an indoor cat, unlike Snowflake who sometimes stayed at home and other times wandered outside. Sapphire was also a young female kitten, so wasn’t she comparable to a pampered young lady? No wonder when Xiao Quan visited, she had called Sapphi a “fairy cat”.

The clueless Mother Lin ignored the cries of the ragdoll kitten and happily brought her into her bedroom to play. It wasn’t long before the kitten was distracted by the cat wand again. In the room next to Mother Lin’s, Lin Lan had already changed into her pajamas and curled up into her bed.

Not long after her head hit the pillow, a furry and soft lump plopped on her head.

“Snowflake, it itches.” Lin Lan smiled as she nudged this white lump to the side. Even though this rascal would probably curl up on her stomach after she fell asleep, it was possible that if she was strict, she could sleep soundly. So, the rules before sleeping needed to be established.

The white cat let out a resentful but spoiled meow. Lin Lan didn’t agree: “No, I can’t fall asleep this way.”

Snowflake could only unwillingly leave distance between the two of them. He turned around several times with his four little paws on her pillow until he settled down into a lump again. This movement would prevent him from climbing onto the sh*t shoveler’s face while they were asleep and avoid the sh*t shoveler being suffocated by her own Master.

(T/N: ‘Sh*t shoveler’ is around the same meaning of ‘cat slave’. Snowflake is calling himself the Master here.

“Miaow…” The white cat cutely and softly meowed at Lin Lan.

Lin Lan’s mind automatically translated the meow as: (Lan Lan, I’m going out to play tomorrow so I won’t be home.)

“Okay.” Lin Lan agreed and reached out her hand to rub the kitty’s head: “You’ve worked hard this month, Snowflake. You taught Sapphire the proper way to eat and drink and showed her how to use the toilet in the bathroom. This saved me from shoveling more sh*t which was very helpful. You haven’t gone outside in a while, so go out and play. Make sure to stay safe and don’t go near strangers. Don’t randomly fight with other cats either.”

(T/N: She means the actual toilet that humans use. I think this gets explained a little later on.)

Snowflake was comfortable when being rubbed and narrowed her eyes while purring. She replied with a meow, (Lan Lan, come with me to play tomorrow.)

Lin Lan did a double-take: “We are going together?”

“Miaow—” (I will introduce you to my friends outside!)

Holy sh*t, her cat son was bringing his feeder to meet his friends!

Lin Lan started to tremble, not believing what she had just heard but emotional at the same time: “You must have great friends outside? No wonder you always love going out to play. Can you tell me what kind of friends they are?”

“Miaowow—” (Cat Boss and the others are very strong and they take good care of me. We frequently go to find food! The gifts I give to Lan Lan is what they gave to me!)

Lin Lan: “…”

She finally solved the mystery; no wonder the gifts that Snowflake gave her were all strange. Turns out he even had a team to help him.

However, this wasn’t the most important problem. The problem that she needed to ponder was—tomorrow when she followed Snowflake to meet his friends, how much cat food and canned food should she bring?

She needed to show her appreciation towards the kitties for taking care of her Snowflake during the past few years.

Thinking of this, Lin Lan slowly fell asleep alongside Snowflake and entered a sweet dream.

It’s funny how Snowflake thinks of himself as the Master of the sh*t shoveler while Lin Lan thinks that Snowflake is like her kid 😀

Chapter 13 is a long one. The author labeled it as Part Two and Three and it’s basically double/almost triple the size of these past few chapters. I will be releasing it as one whole chapter like the author did. Thanks for reading!

  1. This is my last comment for the night, but say it with me now- the. Vet. Is. An. Incompetent. Fool. And. A. Scam. Artist. Great job dude, milking everyone of their money, giving unnecessary treatments, the wrong diagnosis, and giving people a false impression about breeds. Truly, this is moreso a bad reflection of the author (actual author, not translator).
